Advertising is a type of communication that aims to convince potential customers to consume a particular product or service. It often employs different mediums to deliver the message. These include television, print, radio, cinema, billboards, and the Internet.

An ad is usually placed by an advertising agency. The agency is responsible for implementing and executing an ad. From the creative aspect up to the technical side, the agency would make sure that the client’s ad requirements are met.

Because of its nature, advertising is considered as one of the most effective ways to generate revenue. Thus, it is utilized by numerous companies and businesses who would want to increase their profits.

Spending on advertising has dramatically increased over the years. Last 2006, it featured an estimated earnings of $155 billion in United States alone and more than $385 billion worldwide. It is expected to increase to $500 billion come 2010.

Although the main goal of advertising is to generate money, this medium can also be used to propagate awareness. These ads are referred to as PSA or public service announcements. They are used by different institutions such as universities, schools, religious groups, non-government organizations to promote a special cause or interest.
